Royals D.F.A. Jason Smith

Utility infielder Jason Smith's tenure with the Royals evidently came to an abrupt end on January 5. The move clears room for new backup catcher acquisition Miguel Olivo to be placed on the 40-man roster.

Personally, I'm not at all upset about Smith's loss. He was nothing short of horrific defensively and offensively, albeit in limited duty. He's always been a journeyman spare part, a strict backup meant to be implemented for short periods of time. Protecting him on the 40-man roster over former #1 draft pick Chris Lubanski still frustrates me, although in retrospect the move only costs us a small fraction of Smith's Major League-guaranteed $600K salary.

However, this question remains: Who will be our backup shortstop?
